Engagement puzzle
What role could be more motivating than Chief Fabricator for your brother’s proposal?
We had a lot of fun with this: after brainstorming on the premise of a puzzle, Adrian drafted the design, and I consulted on how to optimize curves and dimensions for laser cutting, how to mount it, and which wood and finish I thought I would use.
The clues to each station during the journey were rastered into the primary pieces, with geometrical fill padding the fish, willow, Canada, California, etc. We wanted it to be complicated enough that it wasn’t trivial to solve, but simple enough that Hannah and Adrian would be able to complete it somewhat easily on the day of the proposal.
The day went perfectly according to plan – and indeed, the answer was Yes.
Oil stain brought out the wood grain of the cherry.
Oiling the wood prior to engraving might have reduced the need to sand burn marks, but the wood was clean and nicely lustered by the end.
